The Debt Ceiling Deal Falls Short!

The debt ceiling deal announced yesterday evening by President Obama and Speaker Boehner falls far short of the necessary target.  We have a completely irresponsible spending problem coupled with a fallen revenue problem.  Our leaders once again have delivered up smoke and mirrors in the seemingly endless parade of “Washington Political Theater”.

Over the last three years the federal spending level has increased over $1 trillion dollars per year, while the burden from entitlements like Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid has grown by less than $200 Billion.  During the same period as a result of the uncertainty thrust upon the country by the profligate spending and concern that higher taxes will ensue, the American people and businesses have drawn tight the purse strings while they wait for the dust to settle.

The offer to the people is a $2.4 Trillion increase in the debt ceiling, which at current spending levels will barely get us past the 2012 elections, in exchange for $90 Billion a year in cuts over 10 years and a further promise that yet another commission will find an additional $150 Billion a year in cuts.  So, the president gets safe passage from debt limit talks past the election and the Speaker gets to lay claim to some big sounding spending cut numbers until you divide them by the ten years it will take to realize them, in which time inflation and interest will all but negate their value.  The American people get shafted again and are told to tread water.  Uncertainty looms ever larger, unemployment/underemployed rates are in the high double digits, tax increases still threaten, the true impact of Obamacare is unanswered and the US government remains one of the most inefficient providers of services in the world.

American voters sent a clear message to Washington last November; they issued a mandate to cut spending and they meant it to be in a large way.  The credit rating agencies have put the US government on notice and they too, are looking for large cuts in spending to show that the US is serious about getting its deficits reined in.

The current crew in Washington is in their third year of spending an excess of $700-800 Billion per year on programs that have obviously failed starting with the 2009 Stimulus.  What ever they are doing, is not working.  Half measure and political theater will not instill the confidence that America so desparatly needs

Tax increases have been suggested as a way to reduce the deficit, but would only be a band-aid.  Even if we increased taxes 50% on everyone we would be left with an over $1 Trillion and growing annual deficit.  The real burden on the middle class is not a lack of taxes collected from the rich, it is the governments choosing to exempt over 50% of the workers from paying federal taxes and indeed share your tax dollars with approximately 40% of the population with income tax credits, food stamps, medic-aide, housing assistance and other forms of redistribution by a government whose spending practices have outstripped the taxpayers ability to pay and still support a thriving economy.

At the same time they largely ignore the approaching tsunami of obligations that will inundate the system as the baby boomers begin collecting benefits. All of this is being overseen by an incredibly inefficient and costly, federal bureaucracy.

The Congress and President must take immediate steps to drastically cut spending $400 to $500 Billion annually and at the same time take positive steps to increase hiring and jumpstart the economy in order to address the revenue shortfall.

Please call your Congressman and Senators at (877)-762-8762 Toll Free or (202)-224-3121 alternatively you can email or fax by going here http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/ and tell them to go back to the table and come up with a responsible plan that significantly benefits the American people, not just their careers.  “We the People” are watching, as are the Credit Agencies and the rest of the world.  Ask them to please live up to the promise that our “Shining City On A Hill” has offered to the American people and the whole world.

Take The Town Halls To Washington

Nationwide Tea Party Coalition - "Take The Town Halls To Washington"
MEMPHIS, Tennessee (March 5, 2010) - The Nationwide Tea Party Coalition is today announcing a new project, "Take The Town Halls To Washington", which is designed to bring tea party activists to Washington, DC during the month of March to meet, question and review the positions of approximately 60 Democrat members of the House of Representatives whose vote on the pending Health Care legislation has not yet been publicly announced. Tea Party Nation is a collaborating partner in the project.
Spokesman Mark A. Skoda, who is also Chairman of The Memphis TEA Party stated, "President Obama has indicated his willingness to ignore the people and force his bill through Congress using whatever means necessary. Our objective is to bring thousands of constituents to DC to meet with their representatives, capture their comments and produce a review of those positions on a daily basis. We believe that time is of the essence and the people need to understand where these representatives stand before any vote is taken."
Organizer, Michael Patrick Leahy further stated, "After more than a year of tea party resistance to the big government efforts of the Obama Administration, it all comes down to the next 3 weeks. The Administration has made it clear. They intend to ram down the Health Care takeover through a corrupt Congress by the end of this month, in direct defiance of the clearly expressed will of the American people.”
“It is time for every tea party activist across the country to consider dropping everything he or she is doing and join us in the most important battle of our life time. We need your energy, commitment, and efforts to make this succeed. We need you to consider coming to Washington during this 3 week period, and if you can’t come to Washington, be part of this project in your local area.”
A nationwide webcast is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9, 2010 with meetings in DC scheduled to begin the following day through March 31, 2010. Logistics are being coordinated for those coming to Washington and daily briefings and reviews are scheduled during the project. It is expected that visits will take place while Congress is in session from Monday through Friday.
The Nationwide Tea Party Coalition is an informal federation of thirty local tea parties from around the country who work collaboratively on important national projects. It was the group that organized the February 27, 2009 “Nationwide Chicago Tea Party” in 51 cities around the country that launched the Tea Party Movement, as well as the April 15, 2009 Tax Day Tea Party, where 1 million tea party activists attended events in over 900 cities.
